Shalom Mission

Shalom has been sailing on the coast for more than 20 years.

In 1980 the captains Birger Borgemo and Ulf Ljunggren bought an old fishing boat which became the first Shalom. They wanted to preach the gospel and let people get the opportunity to sail and rejoice together with them. That is the purpose even today.

Shalom´s work that started up in 1980 has expanded over the years. The ship sailing today is the third one. It is 34 meters long, draws 2,8 meters deep and has 40 sleeping beds on board. The ship was made in Germany in 1896 and rebuilt to Shalom during the winter 1986-1987.
Shalom is a floating pulpit. "We want to be where the people are", says Birger Borgemo. He also tells us that Shalom runs by diesel, prayers, and heavenly winds. That is the truth. Everyone who has been sailing on Shalom can affirm it.

The main crew consists of 60 men and women. They are not on the ship at the same time. They take turn with each other. Every week they welcome new groups on board. People from different parts of Sweden sign on Shalom during the summer and sometimes even people from other countries come and stay for a week or two. It is mostly young people that sign on, but also older ones.

Shalom is sailing from Skåne to Stockholm having services in about 100 different ports. In every port Shalom visits people are invited on board to look at the ship, talk to the crew and drink some coffee. Every week thousands of biscuits is being consumed on the ship!
Shalom is also sailing during the autumn, winter and spring. She is renewed all the time. A couple of winters ago Shalom got new masts. First the main mast was changed and then the mizzen. That makes her sail much better.

Besides the ship Shalom is working on land. A bus team started in 1990. The bus team consists of some young people that visit churches and schools. In 1993 Shalom´s second- handwork began distributing in shipments to the poor and needy in Pärnu, Estonia. In 1995 an evangelical school, "Blå Kust", started. It is a practical Bible school with pioneer work for young people who want to come closer to the Lord and work for him. Oskarshamn is the hometown for Shalom´s work.

This whole mission started in the hearts of two young boys who wanted to give their lives into God´s hands. God is mighty and he's expanded his work.

God loves you. Give him your life and he will bless you!
